[WIP] Negotiation books
I love learning about how to negotiate. What I find so interesting is the power of communication and words to solve critical issues. I’ve read many books on the subject. Below is the start of my book list with more to come…
Getting to Yes
A classic book recommended by Harvard Business School that was foundational in getting people to think about win-win scenarios rather than win-lose. The parts I liked best are the negotiation principles of 1) separating people from the problem and 2) understanding interests rather than positions. I found the book tends to be overly simple but I suppose that’s better than too complicated…
Never Split the Difference: Negotiating as if your life depended on it
My least favorite. It is an entire novel explaining the revolutionary idea of active listening. It’s more than one hundred pages of explaining what listening is and why active listening important to getting what you want. Am I expecting too much from society that listening is the baseline expectation of any conversation, let alone a crisis negotiation?
Ask for More
Finally a book written by a woman….Focuses on asking open ended questions (with the expectation that you will listen to the answer). It’s nice to have a framework on how to ask questions that will get you helpful answers. I didn’t find the book revolutionary. Still an interesting read.
To Risk it All
[Review forthcoming….I was intrigued by the his military background]
